The 10th annual Mobility Cup, an international regatta for sailors with disabilities, is upon us.
On behalf of lAssociation qu??oise de voile adapt? and the Pointe Claire Yacht Club, I am proud to invite you to this event to be held in Montreal from June 11 to 16, 2000.
In 1970 an alpine skiing accident left me completely paralysed from the neck down. Back then, I did not think I could ever practice any sport. In 1994, Sam Sullivan from Vancouver invited me to compete in the 4th annual regatta. He said I would be able to control a sailboat using only my breath. I went to the regatta in total disbelief. The experience, however, convinced me of the incredible potential of adapted sailing for people with severe disabilities. We have found a way to compete equally with others. The sailboat used in MC2000, the Martin 16, can be adapted to accommodate the sailors disability, providing everyone the opportunity to aspire to the highest level.
Today, Mobility Cup is the most important event for the development of sailing programs in Canada for individuals with disabilities. It has also become an international "rendez-vous," attracting sailors at paralympic level.
Sailors from around the world, volunteers and sponsors, let us all join to make this Millennium Cup the most interesting and enjoyable event of 2000!
