Wednesday August 24, 2005 All races were cancelled Wednesday August 24th due to a severe storm system that brought with it cool temperatures, 50mm of rain and sustained winds of over 35km/h gusting to 60km/h. The day began with early morning discussions between Nollind van Bryce, Principal Race Officer and Mobility Cup competition representative Merle Hickey, which resulted in a 7:30 a.m. decision to cancel races for the day. This began a rather hectic process to stop the bus which was ready at the UofC to transport sailors to the Glenmore Sailing Club. After several phone calls, food service volunteers travelled to the UofC Residences to deliver breakfast items to the hungry stranded sailors, while others rearranged lunch and dinner arrangements. Calls were made to sailors living in Calgary while those staying with family or in campgrounds could not be reached. Others took on the task to call scheduled Sailing Companions and other volunteers. Staff and rigging crews already on site were faced with the major task of securing the boats which were on the water. We thank all the staff and volunteers from all the representative accessible sailing organizations and the Calgary Boat Patrol who regularly checked the docks and moored boats throughout Wednesday.
The Mobility Cup Committee conveys our sincere apology to those registered sailors and volunteers that we failed to call about the change of plans. You have all done a great job and it just has to get easier from now on.
