English Bay

The race area will be on English Bay, a U-shaped body of water eight kilometres (five miles) long, 6.5 kilometres (four miles) wide and open to the west. To the north, the Coast Range Mountains rise to 1,070 metres (3,500 feet), and Downtown Vancouver is around 10 kilometres (six miles) east.

There are no large ocean swells on English Bay as the area is sheltered by Vancouver Island, 64 kilometres (40 miles) to the west. The average wave height is rarely greater than 1 metre (3 feet), although a strong westerly can push it up to 2 metres (6 feet). The average wind speed is 8 knots and the typical current speed is half to three-quarters knots, although it can reach two knots, and the tidal range is 5 m (15 ft).

In addition, there are 23 freighter anchorages in English Bay, numerous crab traps, tug operations and the occasional floating log.
